When a serious illness strikes, one of its many impacts is financial: that is why The Harbour is strongly committed to maintaining a free service for our clients. Fewer than a quarter of our clients are in full time work, and even for them the typical fees of many private counselling services would be unaffordable. We don’t want anyone to find cost to be a barrier to support, but it does limit the number of people that we can offer to help each year.
With thousands of people in Bristol dealing with a serious diagnosis each year we are not reaching as many people as we would wish. This is why we have a responsibility to ask everyone to think about contributing in some way, although not necessarily financially.
Donations: We very much welcome donations of any kind, from one-off gifts or regular monthly payments. You can donation securely online through our justgiving page, or by cheque payable to ‘The Harbour’ sent to our office at 30 Frogmore Street, Bristol, BS1 5NA.
Volunteering: Above all, we want to spread the word about our work and increase our recognition locally. The most effective way we can do this is through our Ambassadors – former clients who are willing to talk about their experience. This could be anything from speaking at a public meeting to being interviewed on audio or video, supporting our press work, telling or writing your own story. Even if you choose to remain anonymous, your story has power!
Social Networking: Ask your friends to connect with us through our website, Facebook and Twitter : it help us to build a local supporter base which can help with future appeals and fundraising activities. And if you don’t “do” social media, there’s old-fashioned social networking through family and friends, clubs and societies, work colleagues, churches, sports teams, many of them keen to support a charity that helps people here in Bristol.
Sponsored events and activities: If running a marathon or the Three Peaks Challenge is not for everyone, there are a myriad ways of raising funds through other forms of sponsorship: talk to us about your ideas and we will help!
Corporate Support: If you have good connections to any local business as an employer, staff-member, customer or supplier, please talk to us about how we could work with the company in a number of different ways: staff volunteering, corporate events, gifts in kind, sponsorship etc.
Legacies and Gifts in Memory: It is a good idea for everyone, whatever their age or state of health, to have made a will. A bequest to The Harbour ensures that you leave behind a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of others. Equally, if you have lost a loved one, a donation to The Harbour is a very fitting way to honour their memory: funeral collections, a birthday or anniversary gift mean that you can commemorate their life through helping others.
If you have any questions, or would like to register for a fundraising pack please email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 0117 925 9348.
